Why was Senator Joseph McCarthy's anti-communist crusade brought to an end by his hearings about communists in the U.S. Army? His investigations of the military were not permitted under federal law. His investigations revealed that McCarthy had manufactured evidence. His investigations found that communists had infiltrated the military His investigations were exposed as publicity stunts without merit.
His crusade came to an end when he turned his attention in the US Army itself in 1954. The hearings were aired, and the public was shocked when they saw how he was treating the witnesses whom were called. In August of 1954, the Watkins Committee (named after Senator Arthur Watkins) was formed to evaluate a resolution to censure McCarthy. After two months of hearings and deliberations, the committee recommended that McCarthy be censured and the Senate successfully voted to censure Senator McCarthy in December of 1954.
