This speech is known as the " Silent Majority " speech.
Instead of announcing the end of the war that he had promised in the campaign, Nixon outlined his policy on Vietnamization. This allowed American troop reductions and a continuation of fighting. Nixon stated that the U.S. had to achieve peace with honor and to avoid a overly sudden withdrawal.
