I guess for number one would it be. 20 feet = 240 inches. What do you multiply to 5, so that you get 240... 48 because you do 240/5 = 48. Scale is four feet pre inch. Is that correct for number 1?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You are correct for 1. Usually a scale uses no units, so you can say that the scale is 1:48, but the way you stated with units as 1 inch represents 4 feet is also correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay! How about for number 2?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Since 1 inch on the map represents 25 miles of real distance, every map inch is 25 real miles. 2 inches are 50 miles, 3 inches are 75 miles, etc. All you do is multiply the distance on the map by the scale to get the real distance.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Could you show me like the first one.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Take each distance you are given and multiply by 25. 5.2 * 25 = 130 miles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh Ok!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok the last one is weird its like 8 squared two inches 5

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

No. That's a mixed numeral. It's 8 and two-fifths miles.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

8 and 2/5 = 8 + 2/5 = 8.4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh ok so 8.4 * 25

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks :)
