how do u do a stem and leaf plot? 55,45,60,45,30,30,90,50,40,75,25,90,105,60

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what's your data set

OpenStudy (anonymous):

^ up there

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ok thanks

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

First sort it to get 25, 30, 30, 40, 45, 45, 50, 55, 60, 60, 75, 90, 90, 105

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

now break each number into two pieces piece on the right is the units digit piece on the left is the remaining bit of the number --------------------- So for instance 25 breaks into 2 | 5 30 breaks into 3 | 0 105 breaks into 10|5 etc etc Do this for every value ---------------------- Doing all that gives you this stem and leaf plot 2 | 5 3 | 00 4 | 055 5 | 05 6 | 00 7 | 5 8 | 9 | 00 10 | 5 Key: 2 | 5 means 25 Note: notice how we have 8|, but no numbers after the |, this is to keep the table to have no holes and to show that there are numbers that start with 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alrighty then thank you!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yw

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait @jim_thompson5910 if there is a 0 then how would u put it on the stem and leaf plot?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you mean 0 is in your data set?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

or are you talking about something like 90

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no. i have other data stem and leaf plots and 0 is in them

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I'm not sure what you're asking then

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay.. can u add zero in the stem and leaf plot?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

like in 9 | 0 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1367969415177:dw|

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

but you have no other data?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the number 0 isn't in the original list of numbers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know... but there are other stem, and leaf plots i have for homework.. all i need to know is if zero can be in the plot? @jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

oh i gotcha

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes if 0 is part of the list, then you would add it in like that

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

for example, IF the data set was this 0, 25, 30, 30, 40, 45, 45, 50, 55, 60, 60, 75, 90, 90, 105 then it would be 0 | 0 1 | 2 | 5 3 | 00 4 | 055 5 | 05 6 | 00 7 | 5 8 | 9 | 00 10 | 5 Key: 5 | 0 means 50 and 0 | 0 means 00 or just 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OKAY THEN THANK YOU!!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
