my two-pennies: "The Diary of a Young Girl" is worth reading because it is an eyewitness account of the persecution of an ethnic group by a political power. ethnic, racial, or whatever form of prejudice is a terrible thing. that's why we want to learn about the crushing pressure it places on the people who are hated or marginalized just because they are different in some way.

i belong to a minority group, so i know that there is always prejudice in some form in any place at any time. people are just hard-wired to dislike what's different. obviously, what happened in the world war II era was prejudice gone horribly haywire.

if you don't know what it's like, good for you. but the logic of hatred evolves with time so we still want to learn about examples of intolerance and on guard against the haters.
