Find a negative real number such that the square of the sum of the number and 5 is equal to 48

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Let's call our unknown number \(\large x\). `the square of the sum of the number and 5` \(\large (x+5)^2\) Understand how I interpreted that sentence? We are taking their sum, and squaring it. `is equal to 48` \(\large (x+5)^2=48\) Solve for \(\large x\)! :)

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Since it's a quadratic (2nd degree polynominial), you'll end up with 2 solutions. The instructions are telling us that we want the negative solution.
