why did northern industrialists favor tariffs?

Throughout the seventy years between the Philadelphia Congress and the American Civil War, the Northern parts of the continent received extensive migration from European continent which gave rise to the evolution of commercial merchants into industrial merchants. Northern industrialists wanted to follow the same industrial development pattern as Britain, but they could not realize this goal due to floating of cheap manufactured goods from Britain. Thus, they demanded that tariff should be imposed on international trade, especially trading of manufactured goods from Britain.
