The Swahili have played a vital role as middle man between east, central and South Africa, and the outside world. Trade contacts have been noted as early as 100 AD. by early Roman writers who visited the East African coast in the first century. [ Trade routes extended from Somalia to Tanzania into modern day Zaire, along which goods were brought to the coasts and were sold to Arab, Indian, and Portuguese traders. During the period before modern colonialism the Swahili communities along the coast always kept close contact with each other as well as with inland and overseas visitors. Swahili was used as a lingua franca by coastal communities, and during the 19th century it was used as a trade language on expeditions inland. There were probably some pidgins and other contact varieties of Swahili in use at that time.
