how are step-up transformers used in the transmission of electrical energy?

OpenStudy (kropot72):

Step-up transformers are used at the source of energy to transmit the energy at a very high voltage to reduce the level of current in the transmission cables. This minimises the energy losses in the resistance of the cables. Step-down transformers near the energy consumers' premises reduce the voltage to an appropriate level. The corresponding increase in current is in short lengths of cable of appropriate cross-sectional area keeping energy losses low.
