What was the purpose of Operation Torch?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

To attack the Rommel's forces in order to prevent Hitler from taking control of North Africa. It was, in part, an attempt to open a second front against the Reich in order to satisfy the Soviets who were pressing the Allies for one to take the pressure off of them. The British also had interests -- such as oil -- in the region that they wanted to protect.
