Total Music sales is $9000.
Rock music sales is $3150.

What is the percent of the total of this type of music? I don't want the answer. I just need to know how to find it.

Divide Rock sales amount by the Total Music amount, The answer, a decimal number less than one, is then multiplied by 100.  Append the % symbol,  which stands for "parts per one hundred", to the result.

Okay. That's what I thought and I got 2.85 so that's more than one... so what do I do?

$$\frac{3150}{9000}=\frac{7}{20}=0.35=35\% $$

Yes.  Percentage is a ball park method of comparing numbers in terms of parts per 100.
