You don’t have to be a gym rat to be aware of the benefits of exercise. It keeps you fit and strong. People who exercise don’t get sick often. They are happier, too. But experiments with rat athletes shows that exercise can also make you smarter. Exercise benefits your mind as much as your body. In the experiment, some rats swam for exercise. Others didn’t. Later, tests showed that the rat athletes learned better. They were able to think better. This is because exercise works brain cells. It causes the brain to make links. The more links, the stronger your brain. Then it can do more. When you do the same exercises, the brain also makes patterns. Patterns let you do things without being aware of thinking. That’s why athletes practice sports. Practice makes their bodies move faster. Actions become easier. But practice also frees your brain to work harder at thinking about other things. In another experiment, in a room with cages, bright lights, and instruments, rats ran on wheels. People observed them while watching the seconds tick away on the tool in their hand. The rats had so much fun that they would run all night if people let them. Later, the people gave them problems to solve and wrote words in a notebook while they watched the rats. The rat runners solved problems faster and easier than other rats. These seem like good reasons to join the rat race.
