I have to write a short story, I'm not really good with a starting point and ideas. I've had some life shattering events happen, but, I don't think I should writre about that...
I always say write what you know best. Maybe you can take those events and make a new character and make her or him stronger or weaker than you. You can even change the outcome. It's your story.
You don't necessarily have to write about life-shattering events in order to write a good short story. You could take a Seinfield approach and write about the hilariousness (or sadness or beauty....) of simple/everyday events. Blow up a small experience into something very significant and really analyze it to pieces.
Write what you feel, for example, if I am writing a story and I feel mad because I got in a fight with a friend then somehow you can work that emotion into your story. "The best parts are always instinctual rather than something too considered or planned out." -Sonny Moore. That might help you a bit trying to find out what to write about. Whatever you do...Dont overthink it because then it wont be the best. PS. Always have a backup copy!
