Maybe write the novel from the zombies' perspective. They have motivations, struggles, and personalities of their own. Bring the reader on a journey of the zombie apocalypse through the eyes of the blood thirsty, desperate, savage beings - get readers to care about the characters (zombies) so they find themselves actually rooting on the zombies as the story unfolds. Just a thought.
