OpenStudy (anonymous):

Call the point \((a,b)\) and the line \(y=cx+d\). The distance from the point to any point on the line is \[d=\sqrt{(x-a)^2+(y-b)^2}\] Substituting for y, you have \[d=\sqrt{(x-a)^2+(cx+d-b)^2}\]
