the general formula is:
\[\frac{x ^2}{a^2} + \frac{y^2}{b^2} = 1\]
where a is always greater than b, so if the term under y is larger then the y term comes first and the ellipse is elongated along the y-axis. If the term under x is larger then its elongated along the x-axis... let me know if you need more...
