When walking through the woods Adam and Alise saw many mushroom-like organisms growing out of logs that were laying on the ground. These logs were pieces of trees that had either completely fallen down or had broken off of the larger tree. What did Adam and Alise really see? A. The mushrooms were only anchored to the dead logs and were undergoing photosynthesis. B. The mushrooms were helping the trees to stay alive. C. The mushrooms were decomposing the dead tree logs. D. The mushrooms and tree logs were exchanging genetic material.

A is false. By definition, fungi are not capable of photosynthesis. B is false. From the description, it sounds like the trees are already dead. C is the best answer. Most, but not all, fungi are saprophytic and get most of their nutrients from dead and decaying organic matter. D is false. There's nothing in the description that suggests this is happening. Additionally, fungi and plants do not exchange genetic material with each other.
