Well, Homer was a citizen of Ancient Greece, Dante of Italy in the Middle Ages. I have read the Odyssey recently, but haven't read Dante's Inferno in a few years. I'll try to help. The Odyssey can tell you a lot of things about honor, feasting, sexual and romantic relationships, and good Greek manners. For instance, when you think of the scene when Polyphemus eats Odysseus' men and Odysseus says "How can you expect any man to ever visit you after acting like this?" what does that tell you about how the Greek's viewed guests? Just think about your favorite scenes in these texts, and what they tell you about their society. I can't help you much with Dante's Inferno, but that's how I would go about writing the essay. I hope this has helped.
