Pythagoras' : \[c^{2} = a^{2} + b^{2}\] c always represents he hypotenuse and a and b are the other 2 sides (of lesser length than the hypotenuse)

c^2 = (12)(12) + (5)(5) = 144 + 25 c^2 = 169 c = sqrt(c^2) = sqrt(169) c = 13
