Answer - *Relative dating techniques help establish whether a rock, or fossil, is older or younger than similar or nearby rocks, or fossils.
*To date the relative age of a rock, or fossil, a paleontologist, or scientist, must understand how rock layers form.
*Relative dating is also said to be when paleontologists, or scientists, look at the order of fossils in the layers of rock?
~ Now, if a paleontologist wants to determine the age of a fossil by using relative dating techniques, I would suggest that the paleontologist checks where they dug up, or found the fossil first. After they get where they found, or dug up, the fossil, they could then use the Law of Superposition to determine the age of the fossil, whether it is young or old. However, many times, determining the age of a fossil can be very challenging, and sometimes paleontologists want to use different types of method to determine the age of a fossil. In this case, I suggest that the paleontologist uses index fossils, or a fossil record, to determine the age of the fossil. The index fossils, or fossil record, will help a paleontologist identify similar rock layers, or fossils, in different locations. The index fossils can also indicate what type of rock layer, or fossil, is present and its age!
