Why is evolution a multigenerational, multiindividual process? What can evolution not take place in the lifetime of one individual?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it cannot take place in the lifetime of one individual due to the fact that its basically cell mutation. one cell in a DNA code mutates and then that mutation has to carry on through more generations. And for any big change to occur this process has to happen many times to actually change something easily noticeable. so it could possible happen in the span of you to your great grandchildren but only a minor change not much of a big one.
