there are 512 freshmen enrolled in an math course,125 freshmen are enrolled in an English class AND 40 freshmen are enrolled in both. How many freshmen are taking a math course or english course?

|dw:1368656723298:dw|Just add up the 3 areas. Algebraically, this is Math + English - intersection because you would otherwise be double-counting the intersection. 512 + 125 - 40 = the same as adding up the 3 areas.
