A number of these answers do make some sense. The Iranian Revolution was squarely against his regime and the Iranians wanted him back to face charges which probably would have resulted in death under Khomeini. The Shah traveled around trying to find a safe place to live out as an exile, but he eventually went to the United States to receive medical treatment, so I'd go with that as the most "right" answer myself. After his medical stay was over, he left the US, lived in Panama for a time, and eventually returned to Egypt who offered him asylum.
