During this time, many people in Europe were facing religious persecution. Many people were scared of what would happen to them if they wouldn't leave. So people would move to America to practice their beliefs freely. Mark Twain is describing people getting together at night praying, or doing whatever religious people did back then. Because of that, my guess would be B.
