how do you know if you are in love? (btw: to all moderators, this is a biology question)

OpenStudy (koikkara):

Love is a feeling which aroses wen u think positive especially to the part you likes most. When u feel hurt by the responses of the object or animal....we say I LOVED IT< BUT< IT HURTS ME SO MUCH......lol True Love can be found from inner heart, which cannot be destroyed or seperated by anyother forces....

Here's what a group of researchers at New York University did (and I'm going to use some fictional characters, in order to explain what happened): They found a woman named Laura. Laura is madly in love with James. The researchers took Laura, and put her under an fMRI machine. The fMRI machine shows the researchers which parts of Laura's brain are the most active, at any given time. The researchers then showed Laura some pictures of James. When they did this, they saw that a part of Laura's brain, called the VENTRAL TEGMENTAL AREA, became very active. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Ventral Tegmental Area is a very special part of our brain. When it becomes active, the brain cells release dopamine. And dopamine creates feelings of happiness, satisfaction, and well-being. It gives us pleasure. So, basically, being in love with someone else causes a special part of our brain to release dopamine, which gives us intense pleasure, and happiness. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Since you asked this question in the Biology section, I gave a short and simple biological explanation. But your question was...."How do you know if you are in love?" And honestly, I think it would be easier to give a psychological explanation. So, I will. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Psychologists talk about two kinds of love: 1. Passionate love 2. Compassionate love When we fall IN LOVE with someone, for the first time ever, we're talking about PASSIONATE love. Passionate love is very easy to spot. When we are passionately in love with someone.... 1. We think about that person, a lot. They're constantly on our mind. 2. We feel intense happiness, when we do something that makes the other person happy. We share in their happiness. 3. We want to be with that person, more than any other person in the world. 4. When we think about that person being in love with someone else, we feel sadness, jealously, and maybe even a bit of anger. 5. We want to learn everything there is to know, about that person. 6. We want to express our affection for that person. To show them how much we care. 7. We feel intense pleasure when we come in physical contact with that person. When we feel our skin against that other person's skin. (This is a VERY true indicator.) 8. We want to share all of our hopes and dreams with that other person. We want them to know us for everything that we are. 9. We feel very sad, when something goes wrong between us, and the other person. This checklist was put together by a psychologist named "Elaine Hatfield." She spent much of her life studying passionate love, and learning about how people fall in love. If most of the items on that checklist are true for you, then you're probably in love.
