can someone please explain to me briefly on the definition of BOD level/BOD ?

"The greater the BOD, the more rapidly oxygen is depleted in the stream."; does this mean that the higher the BOD level, the stream/lake/water is more polluted because of the lack of oxygen?

no its not because of lack of oxygen initialy that bod increases.due to degradation of waste by bacteria which uses up oxygen in water.....causes decreased oxygen content in water and hence by definition increases its oxygen demand
