5x -1 > 29 how do i solve

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

first you want to get the 5x on one side and everything else on the other side. 5x - 1 > 29 (you want to add 1 to both sides to get 5x by itself) 5x - 1 + 1 > 29 + 1 (what you do on one side you have to do on the other side) now combine like terms 5x > 30 (now you need to divide by 5 to get x by itself) 5x/5 > 30/5 x = 6 Inequalities can be solved like equations, but there are some rules you have to follow. For instance, if you have to divide by a negative number, this will change the inequality sign. Example : -5x > 30 : -5x/-5 > 30/-5 : x < 6. I had to change the sign because I divided by a negative.
