Alright, to answer this question you need to know two things. 
Imperialism- The policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries, or of acquiring and holding colonies and dependencies. 
Industrialization - To introduce industry into (an area) on a large scale
So what would be your guess?

it created a demand for new raw materials which were often scarce in industrialized countries, this lead lead many European nations to build colonies and expand their empires in other continents. How about now? :P
