This site seriously has some of the dumbest people for engineering. What was done yesterday to fix the site? It seriously runs worse now than before!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Preetha what was done yesterday? For a site to be down for almost a full 24 hours, and run even worse the engineering must have been crap.

thomaster (thomaster):

Maybe they had server issues. But, I must agree it's pretty annoying that the site is inaccessible for 22 hour and then find out nothing changed, especially for OS addicts like me :c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right? It should be extremely embarrassing for them to re-open the site with nothing fixed.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

I am an OS ambassador and I have been talking to the team. The site had a database malfunction and a server issue so things were being worked on furiously Some of you may have noticed that we were up in between - last morning for a bit. All were trying their best to get things working smoothly .They worked on it Day and night. How many hours can the OS team go with out sleep?

thomaster (thomaster):

Well, that explains the downtime. But why the image: guarding some NEW features? They should change that in something with maintenance since it can be confusing :)

OpenStudy (aravindg):

If you are there in Facebook then like the Openstudy Official page .The team updated us on the maintenance there.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well if they understood this crap more maybe they could actually fix it.

thomaster (thomaster):

i wouldn't be so harsh on them...

thomaster (thomaster):

Preetha already told the site is being fixed. this is just a server issue :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wouldn't be so harsh? They have known the problems for months. They JUST start figuring this out?!

thomaster (thomaster):

Well entirely redesigning a website like this isn't done in 2 days

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Well they did finally succeed in fixing it .The server crash was unexpected and Preetha was really depressed. The team worked day and night to get it back as fast as possible.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

@thomaster This talks about your suggestion : http://openstudy.com/study#/updates/5182a771e4b0e8530d305c31

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have done more on multiple sites in less time. It's not hard (especially if you actually know how to do it) everyone on this site has every right to be critical about this because of the lack of effort that has been shown in the past several months.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

I know its frustrating .But I request patience in this regard .I am sure the team wont let this happen again and again .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That is what is always requested when someone doesn't know what they are looking at. These engineers need a crash course in engineering.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Well you cant underestimate them like that .After all they gave us the Openstudy we have now .As I told before we will probably get new admins soon .We got a new partner "Cuyahoga Community College".

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because the OS we have now is amazing right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can underestimate them.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can heavily underestimate them @AravindG

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It runs slower and some profiles and questions will not even load

OpenStudy (ja1):

OS needs a full shutdown for 1-2 months and needs to be rebuilt from the ground using better features that DON'T lag OS like crazy, or they could leave it running and make a new offline server and test it that way and then when its done make a beta.OpenStudy.com sub-domain so they can use beta testers and see if it works.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

could not have said is better @JA1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Being able to sort messages by date and user would be a cool addition

OpenStudy (ja1):

Well when you have a site that is crippled like OS you need a facelift big time.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

since yesterday some of the servers still would not let me sign in! Also OS lags so much more!

OpenStudy (ja1):

One thing I can't stand is when people work too fast and push code out before they even test it, no matter how small it is you should always work slowly avoid mistakes and for a website always beta test it, but look what happened with OS especially since this site was made for a few users, not thousands of users which can easily cripple the server .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah I remember when the site was down at least once a week

OpenStudy (ja1):

All because of bad preparation and too many users, that's why I suggest a full make over, and maybe even recruiting new developers and with this new change we can completely review all mods and ambassadors to see who is active and who is not and we can review new mods (a huge need) and new ambassadors

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm a new ambassador, just started about a week and a half ago. I'm active everyday. OpenStudy tries their hardest to get the site lag free, but the main purpose id to help the students gain the help they need. Sure, the site could use A LOT of upgrading and may be frustrating, but we need to set that aside. Have patience in the site, let the site regain control, but don't take it out on the Mods or the Ambassadors, or even the maintenance workers. Things take time to fix, and it's not going to be easy.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The lag makes this site now almost unusable

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Kitt020912 i understand you are new ergo you wouldn't know that much. How long have they known they need to fix it? MONTHS. What have they done? Put it off for MONTHS. Now it is getting terrible. I do understand the aim of this site is to get help to students. Except when a student can't get on the site because of lag it completely defeats the purpose.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OS has been having lag issues for what seems like forever. And the lag only seems worse because of the crash in the server. The site will be running smoother when they fix it up just a bit more. There will still be some lag, but if you go on OS everyday like I do, or some other users, you get used to it. It may seem unusable now, but if you're able to reply to this then it's working just fine. Or should I say good enough? Because it's not working excellent, but it is still usable, and people can still ask questions and gain help. Be patient please, the team is still working hard to fix all issues.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Preetha come and elaborate on whats going on please.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Kitt020912 OS is beyond crap now. like what @JA1 says. Shut it down and work on it for months.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Kitt020912 I am on almost everyday and this has been the worst since I have been on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can agree with you on that, it does seem to be the worst of all lag. I hope they can fix it as soon as possible.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

I have been here for years ,It was not always like this. Some of our main programmers/admins seems to be away.Lets just give some more time .I know they will get everything sorted .Dont loose hope :)

OpenStudy (ja1):

@Kitt020912 this is not as simple as "fixing" it, it's like putting band aids on a crumbling dam, you might hold it up for a bit but when the dam feels like it BOOM it will break and no "fixing" will help it, we need to leave the dam up, make a new dam "offline" and replace the dams but only after we make sure the new dam WORKS. You all like my little example ^-^

thomaster (thomaster):

Yea so i understand they are already building this "new dam"

OpenStudy (ja1):

pfft, who told you this hog wash?

thomaster (thomaster):

preetha :/

OpenStudy (ja1):

I doubt it takes months to make a new OS

OpenStudy (aravindg):

A full shut down is a very bad idea .Where will all the students go when they need help ?Helping/studying in OS has become a part of many student's life .We cant just stop it for 1-2 months. And your example is good but doesnt depict our situation here .The stabilizing process once finished will surely bring an end to all crashes/malfunctioning .The main reason why we havent had any new features for months is that they are entirely concentrating on how to stabilize the site first .Its a step by step process as I was told .I again request patience in this regard.

OpenStudy (ja1):

NONONONONO I do not want a full shut down, like I said we leave the crumbling "dam" up and make a new one "offline" (As in offline server) then we push this onto a beta. sub-domain on OS and we beta test it then we replace the server side code with the new STABLE one.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

You spoke of a full shutdown above

OpenStudy (ja1):

Yes that was an option but we could also make a new site on a server offline

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Thats really a good idea @JA1 .Lets wait for Preetha's reply .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why would a full shut down hurt right now? It is almost summer (no school) @AravindG
