if the ratio of girls to boys in a classroom is 4:5 and there are 20 boys find the number of the girls

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a.12 B.25 C.16 D.8

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

For every 4 girls there are 5 boys, so if there are 20 boys 4x5 = 20 and 4x4 = 16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if it says the ratio is girls to boys, that means it is girls:boys, so 4:5 means that for every 4 girls, there are 5 boys. so set it up like a fraction... \[\frac{ 4 }{ 5} = \frac{ x }{ 20 }\] then you can cross multiply, so you have \[5x = 80\] And then you can divide both sides by 5 to get x by itself, so that \[x = 16\]

so your answer is C, obviously :)
