Fermentation is when there is no oxygen present and phosphorylation cannot occur. Examples are yeast; they use alcoholic fermentation, and our muscles cells. When we exercise too hard and we are sore afterwards, this is due to lactic acid buildup in our muscles due to fermentation because our muscle cells were not getting enough oxygen.
