If one is using APA format and they had a direct quote that was 40 plus words, it would have to be indented. The confusion has been where does the period go? Here is an example: "The mission of the.... institutionsA"B (Code of Ethics, 2004, p. 4C)D So, does the period go where the A B C or D is?
