what is the value of following

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1/0=?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

indetrminate, division by 0 is not allowed

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but the answer is not defined but i wanna know why the value is not defined

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we do not get any real or imaginary no such that no*0=1 or we can say if we multiply any no by 0 we get 0

OpenStudy (jkristia):

My understanding is this. <anything>/0 is undefined because: - it is either going towards positive infinity (if approaching zero from the positive side), or - negative infinity (if approaching from the negative side). So it is not defined because the slightest change in the value will cause the result to go from negative infinity to positive infinity. At least that is my understanding

OpenStudy (jkristia):

but I think the real answer is something like a/b = c so, (a not 0) c*b = a but c * 0 is 0, not a

OpenStudy (loser66):

take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Division_by_zero
