i think that without the missing step you wouldnt be able to say that the next justification was the ASA postulate. but because i filled in the missing step/justification i know that 2 of the angles are congruent so it is ASA. right?

That is it. This step gives you the second pair of congruent angles that you need to be able to use ASA to prove the two triangles congruent. Without this step you would not be able to prove the triangles congruent, and without the congruent triangles you wouldn't be able to use CPCTC to prove the segements congruent.
