can someone help me write a conclusion for my essay?
here is my essay
Ever think that an animal before the dinosaurs still exists today? Well, one animal has been on the earth for more than 200 million years; the turtle. [Turtles] evolved before mammals, birds, crocodiles, snakes and even lizards. The earliest turtles had teeth and could not retract their heads, but other than this, modern turtles are very similar to their original ancestors. Turtles are one of the oldest and most primitive groups of reptiles and have outlived many other species. One can only wonder if their unique shell is responsible for their success. (1) A turtle’s shells can come in various shapes, sizes, and colors. To protect it’s self from predators, a turtle has a hard shell. Turtle’s shells can range in size from 4-inchs long to 1500 pounds. The shell of a turtle is made up of 60 different bones all connected together. The top domed part of a turtle's shell is called the carapace and the bottom underlying part is called the plastron. The bony portion of the shell is covered with plates that are derivatives of skin and offer additional strength and protection. Another word for these plates are called scutes. (1) A turtle’s shell can affect the way a turtle survives and behaves. One of the most commonly known behaviors of turtles is their ability to pull their legs, tail, neck, and head inside the shell. Many of them hide from predators this way. Predators find it very difficult to get at the turtle's soft body inside such a tightly closed shell, and the turtle usually survives without harm.(7) Besides protecting the turtle from attackers, the shells protect the turtle from drying out too much on hot, dry days. One species of land turtles that used this technique many times is the land box turtle. The Land Box Turtle was one of the several species of turtles that lived to be over a hundred years of age. The box turtle has five toes on each limb. These turtles have superior eyesight and an excellent sense of smell. Two interesting box turtles are the western box turtle and the eastern box turtle. The western box turtle is commonly referred to as the ornate box turtle. It seeks a habitat that is arid and open. It is often found in grasslands where it feeds on insects, berries, leaves and sometimes carrion. These turtles live on prairies and in deserts. It creates shallow burrows in the soil to avoid extreme temperatures. This turtle usually spends it whole life in a small area. (8) The carapace of the western box turtle is less domed than that of other box turtle species and it looks a bit flattened. For both male and female, the length of the carapace can exceed 15 centimeters. The coloration of the carapace is usually black or dark brown with yellow striping. The maximum age of western box turtles in the wild remains unknown. One of the oldest known captive specimens was a female that exceeded 40 years of age. (5) The eastern box turtle is found from Michigan and Maine down into the southern United States. Known as the common box turtle, the eastern box turtle inhabits a wide variety of habitats. It can be found in wooded areas, field edges, thickets, and stream banks. Most often they are seen in deciduous forests. They burrow during warm weather and feed on earthworms, slugs, snails, insects, frogs, toads, leaves, grass, berries, and fungi. (8) The carapace is high and dome-shaped, with a hinged plastron that makes it possible for the turtle to completely close the carapace. The coloration varies, but the carapace of an eastern box turtle is usually brownish or black and adorned with a yellowish to orange radiating pattern of lines, blotches, and dots. Eastern box turtles exceeding a hundred years of age have been encountered in the wild. Due to unsuitable living conditions and faulty diets, captive eastern box turtles often die much younger than this. (4) Most turtles on earth are good swimmers. Some of those turtles are freswater turtles. Freshwater turtles vary significantly in looks. Some have the familiar hard shell and webbed feet. Some have a bizarre elongated neck and nose. They usually spend there time in streams, ponds, and lake. Some of these turtles will have a soft shell rather than a hard shell.(6) Two of the smallest freshwater turtles are the chicken turtle and the red eared slider turtle. The chicken turtle prefers slow moving water with plenty of vegetation and soft bottom, such as Ponds, lakes, marshes, cypress swamps. Chicken turtles move over land to find suitable water habitat and can burrow into the soil to escape dry conditions. Thery are omnivorous and eat crayfish, fish, insects and other invertebrates, frogs. They also eat plant food such as fruit and leaves. These turtles have distinct markings on them that include a yellow stripe on its legs and neck. The color of its shell will either be brown or olive color. The shell’s carapace length is 8cm - 11cm. (10) The red eared slider turtles are aquatic, but leave the water to bask in the sun and lay eggs. These reptiles are deceptively fast and are also decent swimmers. They hunt for prey and will attempt to capture it when the opportunity presents itself. They are aware of predators and people, and generally shy away from them. The red-eared slider is known to frantically slide off rocks and logs when approached. Contrary to the popular misconception, red-eared sliders do not have saliva. They, like most aquatic turtles, have fixed tongues, so they must eat their food in water. Red-eared sliders are omnivores and eat a variety of animal and plant materials in the wild including, but not limited to, fish, crayfish, carrion, tadpoles, snails, crickets, mealworms, wax worms, aquatic insects, and numerous aquatic plant species.
