In our kidneys, we have little tubes that filter our body fluids. The tiny tubes are called "nephrons." Here's a picture that'll show you: http://www.unckidneycenter.org/images/glomerulus.jpg It is possible for us to live, and be healthy, with just one kidney. If we lose a kidney, the nephrons in our other kidney will grow, and become larger, so that our remaining kidney can make up for the one that we lost.
