Sort of like Altzhemer's it eats and uses up essential memory until operation is totally destroyed This can be done on hard drive or the virus could be such as to use up all the RAM leaving nothing for other CPU activity.

Can virus cause permanent damage to hard drive.
OpenStudy (kenljw):
I don't think so, but it could become so bad it requires the hard drive to be wiped and the system software to be reinstalled.
