Two congruent squares overlap at the midpoint of their sides. If a square has a side of 28 cm, what is the area of the figure? picture of the figure inserted

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

If so, the area of the figure is just the area of the two squares, less the area of the overlap. Area of a square is \(A = s^2\) where \(s\) is the length of a side. If the squares overlap at the midpoint of their sides, as I've drawn above, what is the length of the side of the overlapping square in the middle?
