Mick built a large cube-shaped toy box for his younger brother. The toy box has a side length of 5 feet. After his younger brother put blocks into the toy box, he still had 27 cubic feet of space remaining for more toys. How much space did the blocks fill in the toy box?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

The volume of a cube is given by V = l * w * h, in this case with l = w = h = 5 ft.

so your saying 5ft would be the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would it be 125?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cause it only gives 2 things

OpenStudy (anonymous):

98?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Cube is 5 feet on a side, so volume is 5 ft * 5 ft * 5 ft = 125 cu ft. After the cube has the toys put in, there are 27 cu ft of space remaining. Volume occupied by the toys = volume of cube - volume of space remaining. 125 cu ft - 27 cu ft = 98 cu ft occupied by toys.
