Find the GCF of the monomials: 24x^2 and 30x^2y

OpenStudy (espex):

What is the largest integer and variable that will go into both terms?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but I don't understand how to figure out the variable part

OpenStudy (espex):

You divide the variable just as you would your integers, however, recall that when you divide something with an exponent, the exponents are subtracted. So, how many 'x' can you take away from each term and how many 'y's?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh I get it now...I can take away 2 x's and one y, right?

OpenStudy (espex):

Does each term have a 'y'?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the GCF would be 6x^2

OpenStudy (espex):

You got it, good job.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you! (:

OpenStudy (espex):

You're welcome.
