Can someone help me. I have not had math like this in years and I have to pass this class. Translate the phrase into a mathematical expression and then simplify. Five times a number decreased by twice the same number. Write the expression The simplified expression is?

OpenStudy (rajee_sam):

whenever you see an unknown number keep it as a letter , a variable ( like x, y etc.) Let us say the number we are talking about is x

OpenStudy (rajee_sam):

times means multiplication

OpenStudy (rajee_sam):

5 times the number is 5x. Now this is decreased by two times the same number which is x

OpenStudy (rajee_sam):

decrease means subtract. 5x - 2x

OpenStudy (rajee_sam):

now solving is 5x - 2x = 3x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the answer is 5x-2x? Thanks God I asked. I had 5x-y^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks guys :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah, I got it. Thanks - it's been so long ugh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just reread this question and it says to not simplify?? and then another answer is for it to be simplified. "type the expression using x as the variable - do not simplify"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nevermind :)
