Is anyone here good at statistics and hypothesis testing?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but, isn't hypothesis testing a part of statistics ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, I was wondering if anyone was good at that part of statistics

OpenStudy (kropot72):

Please post a question about hypothesis testing.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol

Well, I'm confused on whether Alternate hypothesis plays a part in the conclusion. I know that you either reject or do not reject null hypothesis. So I'm wondering what you say for alternate hypothesis.

OpenStudy (kropot72):

A null hypothesis is usually based on the assumption that nothing special has happened, in other words no change has occurred. The alternative hypothesis is that something special has happened, or a change has occurred. Data are then obtained from at least one sample. The probability that the data, or extreme results, are a chance result of the sampling, with the null hypothesis being true, is then calculated. If this probability result is smaller than the the significance level of the test, the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted.
