Dianna runs a race of 2 miles in 8 minutes at a steady speed. Each mile she runs beyond 2 miles, her speed slows 1 mile a minute. It would take her ____ minutes to run 5 miles.

OpenStudy (rajee_sam):

for first 2 miles she runs at 1mile in 4 minutes. 3rd mile will be in 5 min., 4th in 6min. and 5th in 7 min. So total will be 8 + 5+6+7 = 26 minutes

OpenStudy (rajee_sam):

it is not worded right. It should be * the speed slows by 1 minute a mile* IDK maybe I am overthinking it.

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

The composer of this question knows nothing about the speed that even world-class athletes manage to run over such distances, apparently. World record for a woman running 2 miles is 8:58.58. I'd be willing to bet that after the first two miles, Dianna would not have run the next mile in 5 minutes without first taking a break, because the female 5k record for 5k (3.1 miles) is 14:11.15 :-)
