y = 48x + 2000

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Are you solving?

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

@JohnTheengineer we need more info, like what is the question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The cost y, in dollars, to produce graphing calculators is given by the equation y = 48x + 2000, where x is the number of calculators produced. What is the cost to produce 2000 calculators?

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

x = 2000

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Well you are looking for y, the total cost, so you have to plug in 2000 into the equation where x is the number of calculators

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

so y=48(2000)+2000

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wow it was that simple all along... wtf.. lol

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Yup, just needed some clarification

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you solve a problem like this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A truck rental company rents a moving truck one day by charging $39 plus $0.09 per mile. What is the cost of renting the truck if the truck is driven 160 miles?

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Do you know what the equation is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i was thinking about dividing .09 and 160... then multipling that by 39? ehhh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wasn't sure .. lol

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

At least you gave it a try :P but we have to use y=mx+b because this equation is linear

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

actually its only linear when b = 0, otherwise it is affine. common misconception:)

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Oops, sorry wrong wording.. thanks for the correction

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

its silly, I just learned that and found it strange that no teacher has told me that before:)
