The bulk of the human diet comes from two of the families listed, the Poaceae (grains) and the Fabaceae (legumes). While all the families have edible members, what is it about the grains and legumes that make them most desired as foods?

thomaster (thomaster):

I guess because grains have a lot of carbohydrates -> energy -it can also be produced in large quantities on small areas Legumes contain much protein

I'm still confused..

thomaster (thomaster):

when you produce food, grain is a good choise because it grows in large quantities on little area. So you get a lot of grain from a little piece of land. Thats profitable. There are more families but they might not grow in such quantities or do not contain as much energy as grains do. That's why they like to grow grains :)

for how small grains and legumes are, they have a lot of potential energy. They are packed with vitamins and nutrients needed for the body to function. A grain such as rice is common everywhere. A legume such as pinto beans is also common. Combine both into one meal, and you get a megameal that provides all essential 20 amino acids. Therefore, as a consumer its your best bang for your buck....
