which of the following crystals would be the softest? a.p4 b.sio2 c.ZnS d.CuCi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is Ci an element on the periodic table because i don't see it on the periodic table??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

By the way, \[\Huge \color{red}{\ast~\ast}~\color{purple}{\ast~\ast}~\color{blue}{\ast~\ast}~\color{gold}{\ast~\ast}~\color{salmon}{\ast~\ast}~\color{aqua}{\ast~\ast}~\color{red}{\ast~\ast}~\color{purple}{\ast~\ast}\] \[\LARGE \color{red}{\rm{WELCOME}}~~\color{blue}{\rm{TO}}~~\color{violet}{\rm{OPENSTUDY}}\color{purple}{!!}~~~(:\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you sure it is CuCi? haven't you made any typo??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry I meant CuCI and thank you !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is what i think and I hope it makes sense.. okay, so first of all you should know that SiO2 is not soft because it has a structure similar to diamond which contains strong covalent bonds....... Secondly, you should know that both ZnS and CuCl2 are ionic compounds and therefore contain ionic bonds..... The P4 molecules are joined by the weak van der waals forces..... With that said, which do you think would be the softest??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you understand what i have written??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes I understand it now ! Thanks, so im guessing P4 is the softest?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes...that is what i think too!...(:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yay thank you !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you are welcome!...(:
