Hi everyone! As you heard in the ambassador meeting one of our team goals is retention of users. We asked for everyone to try to make 10 new friends. Can everyone please post their progress and the user names of new friends they've made?

Like, I have invited my classmates too on this site, so they are already my friends, i don't think that this will be relevant to mention them as I had made them outside of OS and were friends already before they joined OS. Right?

@BostonBlue how exactly would you categorize "friends", people who have fanned you or people that you feel are really there for you ?

i would say that if everyone is trying to each make 10 'new' friends, then the definition of 'friend' would be someone who is new to the site who you take a little extra effort (beyond welcoming) to get to know. fan them, pm them, chat with them . . . tell them a little about yourself, ask them about their experience on OS - - -just be a resource and a friend for them as new users.

it might be something as simple as just pm'ing them a few times to see how they're doing. that sort of thing makes people feel like someone cares. it's not a deep friendship, but just to the point where someone can feel that the site is full of really friendly people. (we all know what it's like to be new and not feel like you belong.) we can help people feel like they do!

best way to do this is often to start with someone whose first question you are answering. that gives you a start and then you can sort of be their buddy, teach them about fanning and how they can tag you if they need help or have a question - then stay in touch.

of course, not everyone will be receptive, that's why it's good to work on new folks whose questions you're answering. bc/you can get a sense of how engaged they are.

Interesting concept, it's very good too because we get many users that are just a hit and run type of user, and if we were to befriend them we might entice them to come back that way they can build a stable relationship with the website itself and will want to learn more, we need to start getting more users on daily and start raising those SS up over 50 :)

@some_someone . . .with your SS and number of fans, i'm sure that you've already been friendly with a lot of users and caused them to come back to the site!

but if you want to join the bandwagon and do the theme of the month with the ambi group, you are most welcome! :) make 10 friends who are new users.

well, we're looking for 10 'new' friends. people who are new to the site this month who you've gone the extra mile to get to know a bit, pm, fan, check in with them, etc. . . just make them feel like the site is so friendly and like they belong and that they'd like to spend more time here!

Well looking back I really haven't made much progress D: I have gone the extra mile, well I always do but I wouldn't consider any of those people friends since we don't have a stable relationship, guess I will try harder :) btw when does this end?

well, i think everyone has to work on learning the best strategies for what to do to make new people into new friends.

as i said, it doesn't have to be a 'close' relationship. just a few pm's to follow up and say hi. ask if they have any questions. or just how their day is going. invite them to a chat. . . etc.

as for when it ends . . . . we've been out of synch with our 'goal/theme of the month' and our meetings. so in order to get back in synch, i (or KC) am going to start announcing the monthly goal/theme at the beginning of the month on the site. then when we have a meeting later in the month, we can talk about how it's going for people.

what that means is that the june theme will be coming out soon. but i'm going to overlap this one a bit into june, so that you guys have enough time to actually make 10 friends. so let's say that '10 friends' will END ON JUNE 15TH.

and then, the goal for june will end june 30th. after that we'll be on track to have a goal for each full month in future.

(no worries, the june goal won't be too hard, since it's an overlap month - and hopefully it's one you'll enjoy participating in :)

@android09 that is great that all those folks are fanning you! are they people you've helped? how about if you try to really connect with a couple of the new people you've helped? reach out and pm them first! just with a short, friendly msg. ambis are like the hosts, greeting new people at the door and then coming back to ask if they can refill your water glass.

Great analogy @BostonBlue but ambis are so much more than that, they not only greet the user but the main thing they do is make sure the user knows that he is wanted, if I come onto a site and no one fans me or no one is my "friend" then I have very little motive to come back other than just to get help, ambis need to make that user feel as if he has to come back, once you have established that then you can start introducing the user to your other friends and interconnect them that way you made them a part of the OS community :)

My sound was broken and I couldn't hear what Preetha was saying. Furthermore, I didn't get the recording until a week or so after the initial announcement. Not only that, I'm moving, too. So I haven't had much of a chance to make new friends, but I've helped tons of people.

@Compassionate no worries. i know how hard you're working! even while moving! the people who weren't in the meeting got kind of late notice as well, that's why it goes until mid-june. you (or anyone) can go back to 'questions answered' in your profile and look for a few folks who you might have helped recently and just pm them and ask them how it's going? all it takes is a little conversation, establish a connection so they feel welcome. maybe introduce them to one other person (like another ambassador - then two ambi's can make the same new friend :) or whatever works for you. but since you're moving, just do what you can and what makes sense!
