Can you draw it ?

Ok lets see it this way. Downstream means that the boat goes WITH the speed of stream. Upstream means that the boat goes AGAINST the speed of stream. Now Let the speed of stream be x km/hr. Then the speed upstream will be (10-x) km/hr and downstream will be (10+x) km/hr. Fine till here?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now its said that he took 6 hours to go downstream. speed downstream = 10+x km/hr and time = 6 hrs. So distance covered = 6(10+x) km. Similarly the distance travelled upstream is 18(10-x) km. Since distance travelled while going up/down stream is the SAME, 6(10+x) = 18(10-x) i.e. 60+6x = 180 - 18x. can u solve for x now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. so the speed of the stream is 5 km/hr. all u need to do now is use distance = 6(10+5) km. I hope the answer tallies your answer. :) Thanks!
