Aaron ran 3 laps around the track in one minute. Write an equation using laps, L, and x minutes he ran at the same rate.

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

$$ \begin{matrix} x & | & L \\ \hline\\ 1 & | & 3 \\ 2 & | & 6 \\ 3 & | & 9 \\ ... & | & ... \\ \end{matrix} so\\ f(x) = \bf ? $$

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

$$ \begin{matrix} x & | & L \\ \hline\\ 1 & | & 3 \\ 2 & | & 6 \\ 3 & | & 9 \\ ... & | & ... \\ \end{matrix}\\ \text{so what would it be?}\\ f(x) = \bf ? $$

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont know

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

well, from the table above, when "x" is 1, L is 3laps, so after 1 min, 3 laps when "x" is 2, well, twice the minutes, twice the laps, so 6laps and so on

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

ok, if your mom gives you 3 cookies on monday, then 6 cookies on tuesday then 9 cookies on wednesday how many would you expect to get on thursday?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so wats the equation

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

why would you expect 12?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

beacuse you skip count by 3's

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

you're skipping count by 3, so day 1, 2 and 3 and 4 will be like 3(1) monday 3(2) tuesday 3(3) wednesday 3(4) thursday 3(x) WHENEVER DAY thus your function for the cookies count skipping will be f(x) = 3x or cookies for WHATEVER DAY = 3x where "x" is a reference day

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just give me the equation

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

same goes for the laps, 3(1) 1min 3(2) 2min 3(3) 3min 3(x)

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

so, f(x) = 3x or L = 3x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but there is no f

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

yes, is just a generic term for "function"

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

f(x) means the function or the value that is dependent on whatever the value of "x" is so "x" is the INDEPENDENT variable, it changes to whatever on its own f(x) is the DEPENDENT variable, it DEPENDS on "x" to gets its values
