Explain why there are certain x values that dont have corresponding y values. In other words, why are there holes in the graph of tangent? Provide a thorough explanation that refrences the deffinition of tangent as well as the picture of a problematic angle in standard position.

OpenStudy (megannicole51):

They're are holes in the graph of tangent because there are vertical asymptotes. Here's part of your answer:)

lololol thank you.

For some reason my brain is off today.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Based on the definition of tangent, which is tan(x) = sin(x)/cos(x) there are vertical asymptotes at points where cos(x) = 0

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so because cos(x) = 0 when x = n*pi/2 for any integer n, these are the points where there are vertical asymptotes on tan(x)
